A trader earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of American actions.

Market Movement in Wagers

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be no longer in control by the close of the month increased in the hours before former President Trump announced on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

A particular user, which joined the platform last month and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32.5K.

The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market Signals Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that participants estimated the likelihood of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

Yet the odds had climbed to 11% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the early hours of Saturday, suggesting a rapid movement in market sentiment right before the public announcement was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a bet based on non-public details," said Dennis Kelleher.

Several of other traders also profited tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

A bill presented on the start of the week seeks to ban public officials from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the past few years, with participants able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to politics.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.

Trading on insider information is a crime in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the event betting arena.

A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
